City No More 04:17
Open mind Open road now There’s nothing left to keep us down Change of pace Change of scenery Swap the car horns for the songs of birds Called you back Cancelled meetings Packed a couple things to keep us warm Found some land A little clearing We can watch the stars all night long We just can’t live in the city no more The endless repetition is a total bore We’re headed where the air is clear and water’s pure We just can’t live in the city no more Settled in, back verandah Hear the crickets chirp on the lawn Smell of smoke An open fire And the conversation wanders on
2.
Out on the fringes of this town The strangers gather round Fire on the hillsides looking over us Though they have been there quite a while No-one seems to mind We all ignore the signs of our impending demise Pour another one for all who’ve come and gone Sometimes it feels we just pretend to get along Repeat the mantra, I’ll behave myself today And in time I will be better We have been waiting for so long for a saviour to come We kneel down at her feet, receive the wisdom at once Lift her up on shoulders high, parading through the streets But nothing will hold back the tides of progress
3.
You won them over That vacant smile But can you reel it back in The four leaf clover On your lapel It doesn’t mean anything Your cup ran over You had it all Now can you catch it again You have to risk if you wanna win You gotta say I’m all in The maiden flight What a sight But god knows you never learned how to fly Just one look Was all it took And nobody’s gonna doubt you again You quit believing you had the answer To where you fit in Now you’re drifting from shore to shore Just blowing round in the wind What a fright At such great heights You’re heading out to walk the wire again Start to slip Lost your grip And nobody’s gonna catch you this time Late at night you feel alright No-one around to see you falling apart Time flies and all the guys Have settled down while you were struggling
4.
I got a plan A road map to follow Lend me your hand Step into tomorrow I was minding my own Hoping to catch a break In this life I have grown To expect some give and take Yeah what’s there to show For all the hours we wasted Oh keep you’re friends close Oh the joy that you’ve tasted Now times seeming slow Moving at its unique pace Through a mediocre life I try to life it with a little grace I want someone to know My time is not wasted On the way to the show I hope the audience makes it If life is a joke I missed the whole setup Every word I misspoke And the punch line is wasted
5.
Telephone has been ringing off the hook Caught me leaving on the way to work Everyone has been wasting all my time I keep my mind on the future and my eyes on the road Heard some bad news coming down the line Try to keep up a stable state of mind Come on over, we can kill some time Telling stories of our youth Try to find us some truth Spin the wheel What’s it land on Nobody can turn it back, turn it back Make a deal What’s it worth to ya Nobody’s ever coming back, coming back Bought a ticket for the very next train Leave the city through the pouring rain Everyone gets to make their own mistakes If you need peace of mind, try simple passage of time
6.
Boards collecting dust in the hall Waiting for you to call And get your life on track Burning bridges day by day Someday you'll have to pay And I won't be around I hope the sun burns brightest when you need it most Well here we go again You only call me when you're drinking Hungover or high Asking me for money Never saying why Tell me that you love me 'till the day I die Don't lie to me I won't ask why Disappear for days on end Then pretend you're my friend I believe you Waking up on the front lawn Someone's taken you home But you don't recall I hope the sunburn reminds you that each night will end Cause here we go again Watch you kicking holes in the wall Like a slow wrecking ball You bring the house down
7.
Heavens opened on the way down your street I did not break into a run I was happy to beat the heat Got a message from someone who should know You can call me at home and I’ll give you the blow by blow I got no plans I just wait for the weekend Guess it beats lying in bed Every night as the sun goes down I get into my car, go to work But I don’t really drive that far Keeps my mind off of drinking too much Cause the beer’s always free And it’s really becoming a crutch I just check out from the moment I clock in Make enough to stay ahead Waiting round for this feeling to fade But it’s been 15 years so I guess that I’m stuck with the ache Then your smile pulls me out of my mind I was lost for a while but you came by at just the right time Yeah you’re the best friend that this guy could have You keep me on a positive track
8.
She's got it all and I want it Considered air and jet black hair And hips and lips, she'll break yr heart in two Before the fall, we were wanted On the run from moon and sun We'd never sleep, right through the whole weekend Turning out the lights now As summer ends Every season fading Into the next Heading North, find the coast road Away from rain and cold and thoughts that keep me up When rest is all I crave And I'm running from a heart, the strongest feeling Fills my chest with such unrest how can I sleep When I'm not with you Turning out the lights now As summer ends Every season fading Into the next Turning out the lights now My heart will mend Staring at the ceiling I can pretend

Been on the right side Been shown a good time And then shown the door Been kept at arms length Been handed bad cheques Promised the world I’ve been the fall guy Been told a few lies By those in the know I learned my lesson I keep them guessing Stay on my toes Gotta keep on moving on Gotta roll that stone Play another song No-one knows who you are You’re a shooting star Nothing lasts that long Been up to my neck Been drowning in debt Bankrupt and boned Shouted a nice meal Offered a sweet deal Intended to fail Been feted and fleeced By industry creeps But never again I learned my lesson I keep them guessing Stay on my toes

Someone stop the clocks Gimme some time to catch up I've had my head down, screwing around Never try, getting high, watching life go by Savour every drop Learn when to go, when to stop When to get down, light up the town Place a bet, don't sweat Never let it get to ya When it gets to ya I will be true yeah Never met a true believer Just people hiding from themselves Never had the guts to meet ya I put my heart back on the shelf Hear that reaper knock Exit through the gift shop Don't ask why, who's gonna cry It's alright don't fight As they turn out the lights Settled like a rock The river flows over top Take my advice, pay the price All wet, heavy-set Never let it get to ya Never met a true believer Just people lying to themselves Never had the guts to leave ya I put my heart back on the shelf Watch that ticking clock Count every second that adds up Marvel how time flies All the goodbyes Don't fret, forget Never let it get to ya
